Lisbeth Salander returns in the intense trailer for 'The Girl in the Spider's Web'

Remember when David Fincher was going to direct an entire trilogy of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo movies? Ah, the good old days.

I was fairly young when this series was still a global phenomenon, but I remember the hype around Fincher's remake, which starred Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig, being downright overwhelming. Even if I wasn't old enough to see the movie in theaters, that stunning teaser trailer, set to Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song," is seared into my memory forever. Unfortunately for all of us, Fincher's expensive, very R-rated film didn't quite generate the excitement that many expected upon release, and the prospective sequels never came to fruition. Fincher eventually directed Gone Girl, Mara moved on to other roles, and the rest is history. Seven years later, Sony is rebooting the property with director Fede Alvarez, who chose The Crown's Claire Foy for the starring role. Earlier today, the studio released the first trailer for The Girl in the Spider's Web- check it out below!

On paper, there's a lot to be excited about in The Girl in the Spider's Web. Fede Alvarez is no David Fincher, but he did direct the shocking, spectacular Don't Breathe. He's fully capable of delivering something great here. In addition, he has assembled an excellent cast that puts most other ensembles in 2018 to shame. Beyond Foy, the cast also includes rising star Lakeith Stanfield, Borg vs. McEnroe's Sverrir Gudnason, Blade Runner 2049's Sylvia Hoeks, The Square's Claes Bang, Phantom Thread's Vicky Krieps, comedian Stephen Merchant, and Mindhunter breakout Cameron Britton. That's a murderer's row of talent, and I can't wait to see what they all can do in a project like this.

But I have to be honest- this is a bad trailer for a promising movie. Maybe it's just that this series has such a rich history with incredible trailers, but I was left disappointed by what Sony cut together for this reboot/sequel. Overall, the film doesn't look terrible. Alvarez seems to have captured the iciness of the series well, the brief glimpses of the cast are solid, and Foy has the accent down. Nonetheless, there are some very weird editing choices here that I don't understand. If you're going to use the trailer structure of having a long, intense scene at the beginning before a montage of action, why speed up that scene so fast that nobody even really knows what's happening? Lisbeth's interaction with the abuser is a good way to kick things off, but that whole sequence goes on for way too long and throws off the rest of the trailer. I don't want to over-analyze a piece of marketing, but yeah, this was just a little weird.

This is only a teaser, and there's still a long way to go in this campaign. In fact, the production team was only filming earlier this year, so who knows how much is ready to show to audiences. I'm still intrigued based on the talent alone, but as a first look, this has to be chalked up as something of a letdown.

The Girl in the Spider's Web opens in theaters on November 9.
