'Indiana Jones 5' won't hit theaters in 2020; Jonathan Kasdan on board to pen new draft of script

After the failure of 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, different iterations of a new chapter in the franchise have been in the works. The initial plan seemed to be that Shia LaBeouf would take over for the iconic Harrison Ford, but LaBeouf's off-screen antics and disdain for director Steven Spielberg quickly made that an impossibility. Years later, rumors swirled that Chris Pratt, hot off the popularity of Guardians of the Galaxy, was set to pick up the whip as Indy. Eventually, it was settled that Ford would return for Indiana Jones 5, playing the classic character for (presumably) the final time. Disney and Lucasfilm set the film for a July 2020 release, which immediately caused some skepticism from fans. Ford as a geriatric Indy at the age of 78? That's....far from plausible.

Well, there's news on the Indiana Jones front, and it isn't good. Yesterday, Collider initially reported that Jonathan Kasdan, the son of Lawrence Kasdan and the writer behind Solo: A Star Wars Story, has taken over for David Koepp as the screenwriter for Indiana Jones 5. Collider writer Jeff Sneider noted that he had no additional info on whether Kasdan was doing a full rewrite or merely polishing the final product, but it was enough to make fans weary.

Hours later, Variety revealed that Indiana Jones 5 will miss its planned July 2020 release date. Originally set to shoot in April 2019, the film will be delayed by anywhere from a few months to a full year, which will seemingly push the fifth chapter to 2021 or 2022. Variety reported that Spielberg and Ford both want to return to this character, but I'm not quite sure why. While I know these blockbuster movies always undergo tons of rewrites and delays, it feels like nobody involved with this project has a truly great idea for the return of Indy. So we're stuck in limbo again, and Ford will probably be pushing 80 by the time this actually shoots. Spielberg has plenty of other projects in the works- why not just turn your attention away from Indy and just move on?

Look for more on the fifth chapter in the Indiana Jones saga very soon.
