Hilarious trailer for 'The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part' teases long-awaited sequel to the animated classic

Surprisingly enough, it has been over four years since The LEGO Movie arrived in theaters around the world, giving us one of the greatest cinematic surprises of this decade. Few expected a cynical display of brand management to be worthwhile, let alone an instant animated classic. And yet, that's exactly what directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller delivered. It's been a long wait for the sequel, but it's not like we've been deprived of LEGO-related content. In fact, last year alone saw the release of The LEGO Batman Movie and The LEGO Ninjago Movie, two films meant to expand this universe in new and exciting ways. The former was widely acclaimed, but the latter suffered in comparison to the previous chapters in the series. Suddenly, what felt thrilling and fresh in 2014 was in danger of over-saturating the market. Without Lord and Miller behind the camera, could The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part possibly live up to its predecessor? We'll have to wait until February 2019 to find out, but earlier today, Warner Bros. finally debuted the first teaser trailer for the highly anticipated film. Check it out below!

Any modicum of doubt I had about the potential quality of The LEGO Movie 2 has completely evaporated- this movie looks flat-out awesome. First of all, how amazing is it that directors Mike Mitchell and Trisha Gum basically made a post-apocalyptic movie with LEGOs? We witnessed the arrival of visitors from the planet DUPLO at the end of the original film, but never in a million years did I expect them to send Bricksburg into a Mad Max-like dystopia. We get sewer babies, destroyed coffee shops, and a wrecked Statue of Liberty- and that's just in the first few seconds of this madcap trailer. Of course, Chris Pratt's Emmet is still relentlessly positive through it all, the lone bright spot in a world that was destroyed by Taco Tuesday.

Anyways, that's just one of the many brilliant ideas in this trailer, a first look that is filled to the brim with self-aware madness. This is the second animated trailer in as many days to tackle the gender dynamics of these films (the alien calls Emmet a "hapless male"), a surprising development that's frankly pretty hilarious. Even without Lord and Miller at the helm, The LEGO Movie 2 looks to be keeping very much in line with the meta spirit of the original, which is an absolute necessity for this series. While I'm not sure where the alien plotline will take us, I have no reason to doubt this team. It's rare for every joke and punchline to land in a trailer, but that's exactly what happens here. On a visual, comedic, and character level, The LEGO Movie 2 looks delightful. I'm so happy to see Emmet and Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks) and Unikitty (Alison Brie) back in action- I really don't think I could possibly be more excited for this one.

The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part arrives on February 8, 2019.
