Full trailer for 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse' presents an innovative and spectacular animated adventure

Over the course of this week, we're basically getting a fresh new look at every single animated film that will open in the next year. Everyone wants to get their trailer in front of next Friday's Incredibles 2, which could very well end up being the biggest animated movie in history. We already saw the full trailer for Wreck-It Ralph 2 and the first teaser for The LEGO Movie 2, and we'll soon get our first glimpse at How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. If we're lucky, we might even get a teaser for Pixar's much-anticipated Toy Story 4. But alongside these long-awaited sequels is an enticing new project from the minds of producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller- Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Spider-Man may be joining the Marvel universe, but Sony has found a new approach to the web-slinger that could result in something really incredible. A short teaser premiered in late 2017, and its unique animation and wacky comic book style caught my attention immediately. Simply put, I knew this was one to keep an eye on. Earlier today, Sony released the full trailer for the ambitious animated project. Watch it below!

In an age where each and every new comic book movie is met by people claiming that it "looks just like a comic book brought to life," it's thrilling to see a movie that....y'know, actually fits that description. The animation in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse looks inventive and spectacular and maybe even a little off-putting at times, but it looks like directors Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman are taking a massive swing here. And for that reason, I could not be more excited. If Into the Spider-Verse works, this won't just be the birth of a new cash cow for Sony (a Spider-Man movie aimed at kids will make all the money), it could be the beginning of a new era in animation.  Should this movie turn into a global megahit, I can't even begin to imagine how many animated superhero stories with this particular styel would receive the green light. This has potential game-changer written all over it.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller haven't directed a film since 2014's 22 Jump Street, and who knows when they'll step behind the camera again. They have an adaptation of Andy Weir's Artemis on the horizon, but there's no release date or production start even in play yet. For now, I'll have to settle for their writing and producing gigs- and that's not a bad thing at all. Lord is the sole credited writer on Into the Spider-Verse, and that's enormously exciting. The entire trailer is full of Lord's impeccable wit, as he's clearly having a blast playing around with the multi-verse concept. This is going to be a sharp and funny movie, in addition to maybe being the most visually astonishing animated movie in years. There's a lot to like here.

Sony also announced the full cast for this film, which includes Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, Mahershala Ali as Aaron Davis, Jake Johnson as Peter Parker, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy, Liev Schreiber as Kingpin, Brian Tyree Henry as Miles' father, Luna Lauren Valez as Miles' mother, and Lily Tomlin as Aunt May. So not only is this movie going to look awesome, but it's also going to feature an insanely talented voice cast. I'm all in on this thing. Let's hope it lives up to the hype.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse opens in theaters on December 14.
