First trailer for 'White Boy Rick' introduces American's youngest hustler

If you keep up with the movie calendar and trailer release schedule like I do (it's kinda part of the job description), you've probably noticed that White Boy Rick has undergone somewhat of a weird road to the big screen. The film has been delayed several times, with a scheduled debut in the doldrums of January before a shift to an equally lousy late August premiere. Now, Yann Demange's true crime drama will be unleashed in September, possibly accompanied by a festival bow. Is this an Oscar player or just a commercial outing for Sony? Well, anyone who tuned into Jimmy Kimmel several weeks ago got something of an early answer to that question, but Sony opted not to release the trailer online. Instead, they waited until today to release the first look, one of the busiest trailer debut days of the year so far. Go figure. There's something strange about this one, and I can't quite put my finger on it yet. But for now, watch the first trailer for White Boy Rick below!

Well, even after my massive eyebrow raise of an introductory paragraph, I have to say that White Boy Rick looks pretty damn good. Before Danny Boyle signed on, Yann Demange was one of the front-runners for the Bond 25 job, and it seems like there's a very good reason for that. Contrary to my personal skepticism, buzz has been steadily increasing for White Boy Rick in recent months, and the constant release shuffling could just be a result of Sony not realizing what they had on their hands. This is an excellent trailer, a fast-paced spectacle of guns, drugs, and all-out mayhem. As someone who grew up outside of Detroit, I'm always intrigued to see stories about my home city, and this one looks appropriately outlandish.

Matthew McConaughey's grimy family man will undoubtedly get the majority of the critical attention, but this cast is stacked from top to bottom, featuring strong character actors like Jennifer Jason Leigh, Bruce Dern, Eddie Cochrane, and Atlanta's Brian Tyree Henry. The kid who plays the titular White Boy Rick, Richie Merritt, seems ever so slightly annoying, but I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt if he's trying to channel Detroit icon Eminem. I'm always down for a good crime saga, so I would be there for this movie even if the trailer wasn't this good. But considering just how thrilling this movie looks, I'm even more excited than I was before. After all this time, maybe White Boy Rick will be worth the wait.

White Boy Rick opens in theaters on September 14.
