Embark on a dangerous mission in the intense trailer for 'Operation Finale'

If you haven't noticed, this is a bit of a crazy week for trailers. It's only Tuesday, but I've already written six trailer posts this week. And don't worry, there are many, many more to come. In fact, there are just so many trailers that you have to wonder what the studios are thinking. Why release trailers for smaller movies so close to trailers for big blockbusters? Why debut a new look at Wreck-It Ralph 2 when the first trailer for LEGO Movie 2 is coming along the next day? Why bombard your audience with non-stop content? As a movie fan, I'm not complaining about this deluge of first looks. I just can't help but wonder if a film like Operation Finale will be lost in the shuffle of this week's madness. In case you missed it, MGM released the first trailer for Chris Weitz's spy thriller earlier today- watch it below!

I knew next to nothing about Operation Finale before I clicked on this trailer, and I knew even less about the true story that forms the basis of this movie. Of course, everyone knows that many Nazi officers fled to South America at the end of the war, but the story of the hunt for Adolf Eichmann has been lost in the history books. While any movie about tracking down Nazis is bound to be harrowing and emotional, the hunt for the man responsible for such monstrous ideas will likely be particularly intense.

Chris Weitz hasn't directed a film in 7 years, last stepping behind the camera for 2011's A Better Life, which garnered an Oscar nomination for Demian Bichir. Nonetheless, it looks like the filmmaker is in fine form here, crafting a slow burn thriller that will simmer until it explodes. And beyond my fascination with this story and the tense spy thriller setup, the cast is outrageously good. Oscar Isaac is a remarkably consistent actor, Ben Kingsley is an icon, and supporting players like Melanie Laurent, Nick Kroll, and Haley Lu Richardson will likely add something special to the mix. It's a totally different time period, but this brief look reminded me of assassination thriller Anthropoid, one of the more underrated films of 2016.

Operation Finale may be flying under the radar thanks to this week's endless trailers, but the film has officially caught my eye. It'll arrive in theaters on September 14, possibly preceded by a festival bow.
