Diana Prince and Steve Trevor return in the first photos from 'Wonder Woman 1984'

The DC Universe may be in reboot mode after the failure of Justice League, but at least they've got Wonder Woman in their favor. The sub-division of Warner Bros. Pictures spent years hyping up a cinematic universe in the style of Marvel, one that would culminate in a major superhero team-up movie à la The Avengers. But in the end, Wonder Woman stole the show. The Patty Jenkins-directed solo movie earned rave reviews from critics and fans, eventually grossing $821 million worldwide. In North America, it was the biggest movie of the summer and a bona fide cultural phenomenon. In the midst of controversial Joker movies, uncertain Batman reboots, and fresh starts for famous heroes (read more about all of this in today's report from The Hollywood Reporter), Wonder Woman is the rock for DC Films. After the film's runaway success, the studio quickly signed on Jenkins and star Gal Gadot for a sequel, which will be released in November 2019.

The sequel, now titled Wonder Woman 1984, began production today. Earlier this morning, the internet got its first look at the sequel in the form of two still images, one of which includes a familiar face thought to be long gone. Check them out below!

Whoa, is that Steve Trevor in the land of the living?

Okay, before we dig into that more, check out this second image from the film, which finds Gadot's Diana Prince taking a look at the cultural and political touchstones of the 1980s. Dallas! Vacation! All kinds of things!

This second image clearly establishes that Wonder Woman 1984 will lean into the 80s nostalgia that has been so prevalent in pop culture, and that could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on who you ask. I trust Jenkins as a director, and I believe that it'll only be there to service the story.

Let's circle back to the big question of the day- is Chris Pine's Steve Trevor alive? If you don't recall, Trevor's plane went up in flames during the climatic battle of Wonder Woman, which took place in 1918 during the final days of World War I. The fan favorite character was presumed to be dead, a crushing blow that was even addressed in Justice League. So how could Trevor possibly be alive, let alone looking like he hasn't aged a day?

Well, it could be a Captain America-esque situation, but that would feel a little bit too much like a rip-off. Time travel is also a possibility, and Cinema Blend's Conner Schwerdtfeger theorized that this could be Martian Manhunter in disguise. Nonetheless, this is a rather shocking reveal for Jenkins to make this early in the game, one that I didn't see coming. Maybe we're in Kingsman: The Golden Circle territory, or maybe Jenkins has a few tricks up her sleeve. Either way, I'm excited.

Wonder Woman 1984 stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Pedro Pascal, and Kristen Wiig, and it will hit theaters on November 1, 2019.
