Chilling first look at 'The Nun' reveals a new chapter in the 'Conjuring' universe

Upon its release in 2013, The Conjuring started off just like any other creepy ghost movie, albeit one with a hell of a marketing hook. According to horror movie lore, Warner Bros./New Line and director James Wan were originally shooting for a PG-13 rating for their 1970s-set chiller, but even with the lack of any discernible blood and gore, the MPAA determined it was just too damn scary to merit that rating. A film so scary it just had to be rated R? That was going to get some attention. Reviews were sensational, the buzz was off the charts, and Wan's film became a smash hit. One sequel and two spin-off prequels later, The Conjuring is now one of the most powerful and consistently successful brands in Hollywood. Later this year, WB/New Line will release The Nun, another prequel focused on the terrifying demon nun that made its debut in 2016's The Conjuring 2. This morning, the studio revealed the first teaser- watch it below!

I love the first two Conjuring movies. James Wan is a hell of a director, and those two films are just flat-out awesome. They're epic, scary, and surprisingly emotional- a perfect horror combination. I skipped the first Annabelle, and I wasn't a fan of Lights Out director David F. Sandberg's Annabelle: Creation, which tracked the doll's origin and delivered another standard-rate horror outing. So while I love this franchise, I've yet to be sold on the idea that these spin-offs can work.

It's too early to tell if The Nun is the movie to turn things around from this first look, which comes to us courtesy of director Corin Hardy (he was supposed to direct The Crow remake). The trailer is about 90 seconds long, features one jump scare, and dabbles in some other creepy imagery without giving us much substance. If I'm being totally honest, that's not much to go on. But I like the look and feel of the film, which seems to be leaning into some Gothic horror territory that The Conjuring series has never really explored before. The demon nun was one of the creepier parts of the sequel, and there's something about the religious aspect of this franchise that remains fascinating. I also find it amusing that Taissa Farmiga, the sister of Conjuring star Vera Farmiga, is the lead here. I can't help but think there's a reason for that. All in all, I'm down for more adventures in this universe. Here's hoping that this one delivers.

The Nun opens in theaters on September 7.
