Steven Spielberg to produce and possibly direct 'Blackhawk' for Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment

Even at 71 years old, the iconic Steven Spielberg seemingly has no desire to slow down. After rapidly assembling an all-star cast for The Post, which was nominated for two Oscars including Best Picture, Spielberg released the mega-budget Ready Player One just over 3 months later. Granted, the production schedules for those two movies were totally different. The latter, a Warner Bros. blockbuster that required years of pre-production, was shot well before Spielberg ever thought about tackling the story of the Pentagon Papers. But the mere fact that Spielberg released a global hit and an Oscar nominee within months of each other demonstrates his enduring power as a filmmaker, even as the cinematic realm evolves around him. It'll be a few years before we see his next movie, but the director has quite a few projects on tap. While he seemingly wasn't able to crack The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara due to issues with casting the child lead, Spielberg will conclude his Indiana Jones series with a fifth installment starring Harrison Ford, set for release on July 10, 2020. He's also working on a new version of West Side Story with Tony Kushner, and reports indicated that he recently had a top-secret table read for a Leonard Bernstein biopic.

With those three potential projects, there was no doubt that Spielberg would be keeping busy for the next three years. But that's not all! Yesterday, we learned that the acclaimed filmmaker is taking on another high-profile movie. Why not, right?

Widely reported by many news outlets, including Variety's Justin Kroll, Spielberg is tackling an adaptation of Blackhawk for Warner Bros. and DC. While he's currently just a producer, he'll also likely direct the film, which is based on the classic comic about a World War II pilot squadron.  Frequent Spielberg collaborator David Koepp is writing the screenplay for the picture. Warner Bros. chairman Toby Emmerich had this to say about Spielberg's attachment to the project:

"We are so proud to be the studio behind Steven Spielberg's latest hit, and are thrilled to be working with him again on this new action adventure. We can't wait to see what new ground he will break in introducing 'Blackhawk' to audiences worldwide."

Kroll reports that Spielberg will shoot the film after he's finished with both Indy 5 and West Side Story, which means we probably won't see this one until 2021 or 2022 at the earliest. No matter the release date, this was rather surprising news that I don't think anyone quite saw coming. With two projects on the horizon and rumors of a possible retirement, I didn't imagine Spielberg would be so quick to sign up for a giant superhero movie. I know very little about the Blackhawk comics, but I would be silly to dismiss another Spielberg blockbuster. After Ready Player One, it's clear he can still deliver the goods. More on this project as it develops.
