New trailer for 'Untitled Deadpool Sequel' introduces Josh Brolin's Cable

With awards season mercifully coming to a close, the sheer magnitude of the 2018 summer movie season is finally starting to dawn on me. Now, you could argue that things really kick off with next week's Black Panther, especially when you consider that Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One, the Alicia Vikander-led Tomb Raider, and Ava DuVernay's A Wrinkle in Time all debut in March. But I'm specifically thinking about the months of May and June, where the tentpoles will be unleashed at a staggering, maybe even unprecedented rate. After kicking things off with Avengers: Infinity War, which is primed to be one of the biggest films of all time, the start of summer will also see the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story, the long-awaited Incredibles 2, J.A. Bayona's Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and Ocean's 8, a potential sleeper hit in the making. Oh, and did I mention that another Deadpool film is right around the corner? Two years after the Merc with a Mouth revolutionized the superhero genre with a filthy, extremely violent R-rated romp, Ryan Reynolds and company are back for more. This morning, Fox released another unique look at the sequel- watch it below!

Fox is opting for a totally different kind of marketing campaign with this film, which is utterly perfect for this weird and anarchic character. By all accounts, the film is still called the Untitled Deadpool Sequel- and yes, if they stick with that title until the release, it'll probably be my favorite in-joke in a blockbuster in years. This trailer serves mainly to introduce Josh Brolin's Cable, a decision that makes sense given that most audience members are probably unfamiliar with the time-traveling assassin. But don't worry, there's still plenty of room for Deadpool's antics in this trailer hybrid of sorts. We get green screen jokes, jabs at the Superman mustache fiasco, some self-referential writing gags, and a scene where an action figure version of Deadpool quotes Toy Story. So yeah, this still gets crazy. I like that the trailer provides an immediate contrast between Cable's doom and gloom and Deadpool's manic style, which is where most of the comedy will likely come from in this sequel. From a visual and action standpoint, the film looks terrific, something that comes as no surprise when you realize that John Wick/Atomic Blonde director David Leitch and cinematographer Jonathan Sela shot this installment.

The Untitled Deadpool Sequel is just over 3 months away, and the best part is that we know zero plot details. Well, beyond a totally insane synopsis that includes references to a near fatal bovine attack, the town of Mayberry, and sexually aggressive canines. So whatever this movie ends up being, we're in for something truly wild. While I know that Deadpool's brand of lunacy might not be everyone's cup of tea, I can't wait to see where this series goes from here.

Untitled Deadpool Sequel hits theaters on May 18.
