Michael Bay is DC's pick to direct 'Lobo'

Yesterday was a big day for the DC Films news cycle, a cycle that seems to restart on a semi-regular basis. And it makes sense- DC has had a pretty rocky road thus far. After the failure of Zack Snyder/Joss Whedon's Justice League, a film that made over $100 million less than Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle at the box office, the future of DC seemed to be up in the air. Now that the dust has settled, DC chief Geoff Johns (basically their equivalent of Marvel's Kevin Feige) is seemingly shying away from big crossover and team-up movies, regardless of what the post-credits stinger in Justice League may have indicated. Using the success of Wonder Woman as a model, DC is leaning into standalone films driven by strong filmmakers, such as James Wan's Aquaman, David F. Sandberg's Shazam, and Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman 2. The big news yesterday was that Joaquin Phoenix has reportedly agreed to play the Joker in Todd Phillips' gritty spin-off film, which represents a huge step forward for that project. But wait- there's more! Late Thursday afternoon, news broke about a potential DC project that is sure to send fans reeling.

According to The Wrap's Umberto Gonzalez, the one and only Michael Bay is being pursued by Warner Bros. and DC to direct Lobo. Per the report, there's no deal in place yet, and Bay isn't even in official negotiations. Instead, he simply discussed the project with Warner and gave notes to screenwriter Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman; he's also literally the annoying screenwriter in La La Land, I'm not kidding, look it up). Obviously the studio hopes that this will lead somewhere, but Bay directing is far from a guarantee at this point. So before anyone gets too excited, there's still a chance that this falls through.

I'll be honest, I'm totally unfamiliar with the character of Lobo. The Wrap's report describes him as a "blue-skinned, 7-foot-tall, heavily muscled antihero alien" and, uh, that sure sounds like one hell of a character. I remember that Dwayne Johnson was originally supposed to play the character at one point, but there have been so many DC projects that never came to fruition that it's hard to keep track of them all. The real news isn't Lobo though- it's the idea that Bay might jump into the superhero genre. For a moment, let's all forget about the disaster that was Transformers: The Last Knight and just briefly ponder what Bay could do to the superhero genre. It would be madness. My unfamiliarity with the character means that I have no idea if he's a good fit for Lobo- but people seem to be pretty pumped about the possibilities.

And honestly, if anything gets Bay out of the nightmare that is the current Transformers franchise, I'll be happy. He built that series, he made a couple good films, and now it's time to go. Hopefully he can bring his singular style to a new franchise.
