Full teaser trailer and character posters for 'Solo: A Star Wars Story' hit the web

It may have taken longer than any of us could have anticipated, but the marketing campaign for Lucasfilm's Solo: A Star Wars Story has finally begun. Most people have speculated that Disney wanted to hold off until Star Wars: The Last Jedi finished its run before kicking things into high gear for Solo, a decision that makes logical sense. The only problem was that the Ron Howard-directed film underwent one of the most tumultuous productions in recent Hollywood history, thanks to the abrupt firing of LEGO Movie directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and the massive amounts of additional photography that supposedly resulted in 80% of the film being re-shot. The buzz on Solo has been overwhelmingly negative for months now, and even a big Star Wars fan like myself felt like this was a lost cause, especially after the hugely disappointing Rogue One.

Now, this film still very well could turn out to be a total disaster, but I'm surprisingly encouraged by what I've seen so far. Last night, Lucasfilm revealed a quick first look at the film, confirming that the full trailer would arrive this morning. And just a few hours ago, the teaser for Solo finally arrived. Watch it below!

I'll be honest, part of me is still shocked that this thing is going to be in theaters by May 25. But this trailer confirms that Disney won't be punting the movie to Christmas- Solo will be dropping on Memorial Day weekend. That could either be a good sign or a bad one depending on who you ask, but I must admit that I like the footage we've been shown. Maybe it's just because of low expectations thanks to the months of insanely bad buzz, or maybe Ron Howard and Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy actually pulled all the pieces together. Regardless, there's no denying that Lucasfilm has delivered two well-cut marketing clips for the film, teasers that show off an excellent visual aesthetic and a fun vibe. As I said yesterday, the film looks grittier and darker than I imagined (similar to Rogue One), but I don't mean that in a bad way. Bradford Young's cinematography looks stark and beautiful, and the cast looks as excellent as I had hoped, especially Donald Glover's Lando and Emilia Clarke's Qi'Ra. This still feels like an afterthought in a post-Lord/Miller era, but I'm confident that the ride will be worth it. Fingers crossed.

Solo: A Star Wars Story will arrive in theaters on May 25. Also check out these sweet posters below! They're almost better than the trailer itself.
