Casting News- 'Phantom Thread' star Vicky Krieps joins 'The Girl in the Spider's Web'; Timothée Chalamet to lead David Michôd's 'The King'

Awards season might finally be coming to a close (I swear this season has gone on forever), but the breakout stars of this year's films won't be going anywhere. In addition to newly minted directorial icons like Greta Gerwig and Jordan Peele, the 2017/2018 season has seen its fair share of overnight sensations in the acting department. Get Out's Daniel Kaluuya became a genuine superstar after a series of small roles, but if we're talking about performers who rose from relative obscurity, the breakouts of the season have to be Vicky Krieps and Timothee Chalamet. Sure, Chalamet had a minor role in Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, but I wouldn't have noticed him if he walked by me on the street. As for Krieps, the Luxembourg-born star of Phantom Thread had appeared in a variety of small parts before getting the chance to go toe-to-toe with Daniel Day-Lewis, which resulted in some of the best screen chemistry of the year. But now that they're household names, Chalamet and Krieps won't be going anywhere- and the movie world is a little brighter because of them.

On Thursday, Variety's Justin Kroll revealed that Krieps has joined the cast of The Girl in the Spider's Web. No word on who Krieps will be playing, but this project is quickly assembling a talented cast. First, you're probably wondering- what even is this movie? Well, it's not a sequel to David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which starred Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig as Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist, respectively. Fincher originally planned to adapt The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest, the final two books in the original trilogy, but those plans eventually fell through. Instead of trying to crack those two novels again, Sony has turned to the fourth book in the series, written by David Lagercrantz (the trilogy was written by Stieg Larsson, but he passed away in 2004).

So what we have is something of a reboot, which will feature a whole new cast. Claire Foy is playing Salander, Blade Runner 2049's Sylvia Hoeks stars as Salander's twin sister (per Kroll), Sverrir Gudnason will star as Blomkvist. The supporting cast is perhaps even more spectacular- The Square's Claes Bang, Lakeith Stanfield, Mindhunter's Cameron Britton, and comedy star Stephen Merchant. But to make things even more enticing, Don't Breathe's Fede Alvarez is directing from a script co-written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight. This is a lot of talent for one movie, and I must admit that I'm pretty curious to see how this turns out. The addition of Krieps makes a great cast even better, and I hope that Alvarez has another terrific role for her after Phantom Thread. The Girl in the Spider's Web is filming right now and will be released on November 9.

As for Chalamet, Deadline exclusively reported that the Call Me By Your Name star is set to lead David Michôd's The King, a modern adaptation of Shakespeare's Henry V. Chalamet will play the young king, following his reign shortly after a surprise coronation in the late 1300s. Michôd wrote the script with Joel Edgerton, and according to Deadline's report, production will begin in June. Plan B is producing with Netflix distributing the film, similar to the situation with Michôd's War Machine. Twitter was excited to learn that Robert Pattinson is listed as a co-star in The King, but there has been no confirmation on that front as of yet. War Machine was something of a disaster, so that doesn't exactly give me a ton of confidence. Nonetheless, Chalamet is beyond brilliant in Call Me By Your Name, so I have high hopes for his next major role (I'm assuming that Woody Allen's A Rainy Day in New York will never get released). The King will likely debut in 2019.
