This Week in Trailers: New clips from 'I, Tonya,' 'Downsizing,' and 'The Disaster Artist'

Things have been picking up at school, and with October being a generally slow and miserable news month for movies, I've gotten out of the rhythm of writing daily trailer/news reports. So to recap some of the best of the week, I'm going to talk about three trailers for some of the most hotly anticipated 2017 releases we have yet to see. These are all films that played at festivals, and they'll all be smashing into theaters in the month of December. Let's start with Craig Gillespie's I, Tonya, which could be the breakout hit of this year's Oscar season. The film made a huge splash at TIFF, and upstart distributor NEON picked it up for a December 8 release. After a brief teaser was released back in October, the full trailer hit the web earlier this week- check it out!

This looks like the kind of film that I will absolutely adore, and while some have accused it of ripping off its inspirations, I think it looks like a good deal of fun. Margot Robbie is definitely going to be a force to be reckoned with in the Best Actress category, and many pundits seem to believe that Allison Janney is your Best Supporting Actress front-runner. The film looks like a rock 'n' roll biopic of the highest order, and this is a supremely well-cut trailer. This could very well turn into a breakout hit in December and January.

Next up is the third trailer for James Franco's The Disaster Artist, another film that could end up being a critical and commercial sensation. Check out another look at Franco's Tommy Wiseau!

I was already completely sold on The Disaster Artist, so another new trailer was just gravy. Once again, this movie looks hysterical, and Franco looks like dynamite as Wiseau. I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest to see him get a Best Actor nomination. That being said, I think it's definitely going to be interesting to see if this film connects with a wide audience. The Room is very much a cult thing, and this trailer is clearly selling this movie to an audience that has some familiarity with Wiseau and the disastrous classic. The concept has some broad appeal- but will audiences show up? We'll see. The Disaster Artist will begin in limited release on December 1 before going wide on December 8.

Finally, we have the second trailer for Alexander Payne's Downsizing. Its awards prospects were harmed by mixed reviews out of Telluride and Toronto, but Paramount is still hoping (hell, praying) that this innovative sci-fi comedy can turn into a hit. Watch the new trailer below!

Maybe I'm just optimistic or maybe I'm being totally duped by effective studio marketing, but I'm still really excited for Downsizing. This looks bold and uplifting and strange in all the right ways, and Matt Damon seems like the perfect everyman lead for this part. I'm also a pretty big fan of The Descendants and Nebraska, Alexander Payne's last two films, so this was always a project on my watchlist. The reviews are so mixed that my expectations aren't sky high, but this looks too unique to resist.

Downsizing will debut on December 22.
