'The Last Jedi' director Rian Johnson to write and direct new trilogy of 'Star Wars' films

We're just over a month away from the release of The Last Jedi, the 8th chapter in the Star Wars saga, and excitement is running at an all-time high. Things have been slightly rocky at Lucasfilm this year, highlighted by the firing of Phil Lord and Chris Miller from Solo: A Star Wars Story, as well as Colin Trevorrow's dismissal from Star Wars: Episode IX. Nonetheless, Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy seems to be bringing things back to normal, hiring filmmakers that know how to work in the studio's system (ex- J.J. Abrams) while still delivering crowd-pleasing results. Ever since it was announced that Rian Johnson would be taking on a Star Wars movie, fans have been undeniably excited. And while other directorial pairings haven't quite worked out, reports have indicated that Johnson's working relationship with Kennedy has been nothing short of tremendous. Disney seems to be enormously happy with The Last Jedi, and there's already some Oscar buzz swirling around the film. When the studio began searching for a new director for Episode IX, many thought that Johnson would be in the running. Instead, it appears that Lucasfilm has different plans for the acclaimed filmmaker.

Earlier today, Lucasfilm officially revealed that Rian Johnson will be creating a brand-new Star Wars trilogy, one that is separate from the Skywalker mythology that has long been the driving force of the franchise. Johnson will write and direct the first installment in this trilogy, with longtime partner Ram Bergman producing the film. The announcement reveals that Johnson will "introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored." Here are a few quotes from all parties involved:

Kathleen Kennedy- "We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi. He's a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy."

Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman- "We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi. Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can't wait to continue with this new series of films."

Since these projects are pretty far away, no release dates have been set, and as revealed by the statement, "no porgs were available for comment." Nonetheless, this is an exciting development, one that seems to reveal that we're about to see something very special with The Last Jedi. In addition to that, I'm more excited about what it represents for the future of Star Wars. Whether it's the sequels or spin-offs involving characters we know and love, the new generation of Star Wars adventures under Disney's leadership have focused on a specific kind of familiarity. Allowing Johnson to branch out in a new direction is thrilling, and I can't wait to see what he does with this new trilogy.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens on December 15.
