First trailer for 'Rampage' teases Dwayne Johnson's latest action flick

Dwayne Johnson may have saved the Fast and Furious franchise from irrelevance, but he hasn't had the best run of movies in recent years. Excluding Moana, in which he voices the heroic Maui, "The Rock" has appeared in films like San Andreas, Central Intelligence, and Baywatch, projects that range from being thoroughly mediocre to genuinely awful. The latter film was particularly controversial, since Johnson felt it necessary to launch a series of attacks against critics who panned the film, an odd choice considering most film writers generally like The Rock. That strange move sort of changed my opinion of him- it was a terrible movie, and I don't know why he couldn't just accept that and move on. But beyond that weird choice and a string of shrug-worthy films (that all still made money), Johnson is obviously one of the biggest stars on the planet. He has several projects in production at the moment, and he shows no signs of stopping- well, unless he decides to run for President. Next April, The Rock will star in Rampage, a video game adaptation that looks, well, completely nuts. Watch the first trailer below!

A giant gorilla. A giant wolf. A giant crocodile. This movie looks ludicrous.

And I'm so in.

While I'm certain that Rampage won't be any kind of masterpiece, this looks like the type of schlock that I inherently love. This is a ridiculous, over-the-top, old-school adventure, with a cheesy role that is perfect for The Rock. The fact that it's directed by San Andreas' Brad Peyton gives me some doubts, but Rampage looks like the kind of B-movie that we rarely see in Hollywood anymore. From an over-sized wolf chasing down Joe Manganiello in the woods, to Jeffrey Dean Morgan playing a shady government agent with a southern drawl, I have a feeling this is going to be some grade A nonsense. And while Hollywood has its fair share of disaster movies each year, hell, at least this one appears to be doing something original. Giant monsters fighting in downtown Chicago? Bring it on.

Rampage debuts in theaters on April 20.
