Warner Bros. reveals first trailer for Alicia Vikander's 'Tomb Raider' reboot

Remember when 2016 was the year that was going to save video game movies? Yeah, me neither.

At the start of last year, many thought that Duncan Jones's Warcraft and Justin Kurzel's Assassin's Creed would bring legitimacy to the genre in various ways. Warcraft was going to be the biggest visual effects spectacle since Avatar, and Assassin's Creed would be the first "prestige" title thanks to its esteemed cast and arthouse director. Cut to the end of the year- both films received overwhelmingly negative reviews, and despite some financial success from overseas box office, both were certified bombs in the US. You would think that Hollywood would just give up at this point, but it seems like they're going to keep trying until the end of time. Warner Bros. is kicking things back into gear with a reboot of Tomb Raider, which first hit the screen in a two-film series starring Angelina Jolie in the early 2000s. Alicia Vikander will be making her debut as Lara Croft, and the studio is certainly hoping to kick-start a popular new franchise. Last night, the first trailer hit the web- check it out below!

Meh.

This trailer really doesn't deserve much more than a shrug, as it doesn't indicate that we'll be seeing anything special come next year. I love Alicia Vikander, and I'm excited to see her profile as a major star continue to rise, but dare I say she looks incredibly miscast as Lara Croft. I've never played the games, so I don't know the character all that well, but I was disappointed to find a trailer that is so wooden and humorless. Besides the welcome appearances of character actors Nick Frost and Walton Goggins, Tomb Raider appears to have an air of self-seriousness about it, highlighted by the stoic-looking Vikander. The visuals look fine, but why can't adventure movies be fun anymore? Why can't this franchise capture the spirit and energy of something like Indiana Jones? I don't know, I'm sure it'll be mildly diverting, but nothing here is giving me much confidence. Here's hoping that this is just a mediocre trailer, and that one of Hollywood's best young actresses finally has the franchise she deserves.

Tomb Raider opens March 16, 2018.
