Release Date News: 'John Wick: Chapter Three,' James Gray's 'Ad Astra' set to debut in 2019

As 2017 moves into the home stretch and studios begin to prepare for 2018, we'll also begin to see the 2019 release calendar coming together. Yes, it's a long time from now, but this is just how the game works these days. Earlier this week, Disney moved Star Wars: Episode IX to December 20, 2019 after it was officially revealed that J.J. Abrams will be directing the film. This prompted a bunch of release dates to shuffle around, including Disney's Aladdin, which will be taking the May 24, 2019 slot vacated by Episode IX. But beyond the shifts at the Mouse House, two somewhat smaller films that I can't wait to see received new 2019 dates.

We'll start with Ad Astra, the new science fiction film from director James Gray, with a cast that includes Brad Pitt, Ruth Negga, Tommy Lee Jones, and Donald Sutherland. Gray has long been emblematic of the kind of auteur filmmaker who can no longer get big budgets in Hollywood despite an overwhelming amount of directorial vision, so it's nice to see that he'll get the chance to be at the helm for a sci-fi flick. After proving his epic chops with this year's brilliant, sweeping jungle journey The Lost City of Z, it's only fitting that Gray gets to continue experimenting with large-scale filmmaking. According to IMDb, the film chronicles an Army engineer's attempt to search the galaxy for his missing father, who vanished while looking for alien life. Ad Astra will debut on January 11, 2019, which I assume means that 20th Century Fox will give it a platform run at the end of 2018. Either way, it's one that I can't wait to see.

John Wick: Chapter Two was one of the biggest surprises of early 2017, an action sequel that upped the ante to an absurd degree and managed to surpass its predecessor in every way. More violence, more stylized mayhem, more Keanu Reeves- Chapter Two just rocked. And with impressive box office receipts, it was only a matter of time before Lionsgate officially announced Chapter Three. Yesterday was finally the day, as the studio revealed that the third adventure with everyone's favorite superhuman assassin will hit theaters on May 17, 2019. That's two weeks after the untitled fourth Avengers film, and a week before Warner Bros.' Minecraft and the aforementioned Aladdin. Moving to the heat of the summer movie season is definitely a bold move, but the R-rated Wick franchise should be able to attract its own audience in the family-friendly month. After the cliffhanger conclusion to Chapter Two, words cannot express how thrilled I am to see the story continue.

Look for more release date news soon as the 2019 calendar will certainly continue to develop over the coming weeks.
