Production finally begins on James Cameron's four 'Avatar' sequels

Despite finishing with $760 million in the US (second only to Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and a record-shattering $2.78 billion worldwide, I would bet that most moviegoers don't have many fond memories of James Cameron's Avatar. This subject has been written on at length by much better writers than me (check out this excellent piece by Forbes writer Scott Mendelson), but to put it bluntly, once the novelty effect of the film's 3D technology and visuals wore off, the film itself proved to be fairly uninteresting. So while Cameron has been working away in pre-production for the last seven years on his four sequels to that 2009 film, the question has to be raised- does anybody care? I certainly don't, but there's something to be said for trusting James Cameron. He turned a movie about the Titanic into one of the biggest global hits of all time, and against all odds, he did the same thing with an original sci-fi epic a decade later. There's no reason to believe that he can't do it again.

Yesterday, it was revealed that after several long years of development, it's official- the Avatar sequels are finally happening. Deadline reported that Cameron will shoot all four sequels in succession, with a reported production cost of over $1 billion dollars. The site mentions Peter Jackson's epic venture with The Lord of the Rings trilogy as a comparison, but I think it's safe to say that what Cameron is attempting has never been done before. This is a monstrous undertaking the likes of which we have never seen, and if it was anyone but Cameron, I would be incredibly skeptical. But even though the director is widely disliked in many Hollywood circles, he has a track record that cannot be denied. I'm not a fan of the original Avatar, but then again, I didn't see it in theaters- I was 11 years old at the time, and didn't quite have the movie fixation I have today. Everyone who did see that film in theaters discusses it like some kind of out-of-body experience, a trip to another world that they'll never forget. For that reason, I can't help but be a little curious to see how these sequels will turn out. Cameron very well could make another blockbuster extravaganza for the record books.

Avatar 2 will hit theaters on December 18, 2020, a grand total of 11 years after the release of its predecessor. Avatar 3 will follow on December 17, 2021, and after a three-year hiatus, Cameron will finish the series with the back-to-back releases of Avatar 4 on December 20, 2024 followed by Avatar 5 on December 19, 2025. We're less than a decade away from finishing this series off!
