Paramount reveals wondrously weird full trailer for Alexander Payne's 'Downsizing'

Only a few short weeks ago, we got our first look at Alexander Payne's Downsizing thanks to a trailer tease that was released in the immediate aftermath of the film's premiere at the Venice Film Festival. And despite a few noticeable detractors, the sci-fi comedy was a major smash at the fest, receiving critical raves and Oscar buzz. However, the tide quickly turned for Payne and Paramount, as the film's subsequent appearances at Telluride and TIFF saw a decidedly different reaction. While Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes are not the ultimate determining factors of critical reception, the fact that the scores dropped like a rock on both sites is not an encouraging sign. Going into the season, it looked like Paramount had three potential Oscar players in the form of mother!, Suburbicon, and Downsizing. Now, it looks like they have nothing, with some even encouraging the studio to push the latter into 2018 to avoid competition from Star Wars: The Last Jedi. But it appears that Paramount is pushing full steam ahead with the marketing for Payne's latest, releasing the full trailer that was promised by the late-August teaser. Check it out below!

Okay, so I know that Downsizing has been massively divisive. Reactions are all over the map, nobody can come to a consensus on this thing. I should be skeptical, but after watching this trailer, I can't help but be incredibly excited to see this film. For one, I consider myself to be a fan of Payne's recent movies- I loved the heartbreaking storytelling in The Descendants, and the fabulous, quirky character work in Nebraska was exactly my speed. To see him get the opportunity to work on a larger canvas is truly enticing, and even if the project ends up being relatively flawed, I feel like it has the potential to still be more interesting than most Hollywood products. Downsizing appears to be rich with fascinating concepts and material, and there's a sort of everyman appeal to Matt Damon's character that I think could really work. Payne appears to have created a unique universe with plenty of opportunities for complex social commentary, and even if some aspects of the film aren't quite up to par, this should be endlessly compelling nonetheless. This is an excellent trailer- kudos to whoever cut this thing. Reviews be damned, this is still one of my most anticipated of the fall season.

Downsizing will debut nationwide on December 22.
