First trailer debuts for Greta Gerwig's Telluride hit 'Lady Bird'

The general consensus was that this was a weaker year for the Telluride Film Festival, the annual escape to the Colorado mountains for cinephiles hoping to see the next Best Picture winner. Sure, there were plenty of well-received films, but only one or two that really blew the roof off the place. The biggest hit of the festival was probably Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water, which has received near-unanimous raves and awaits a powerful Oscar campaign from Fox Searchlight. Joe Wright's Darkest Hour was also a success, launching Gary Oldman into the Best Actor race. But perhaps the biggest surprise of Telluride was Lady Bird, which entered with a bit of uncertainty surrounding it. The directorial debut of Greta Gerwig, who has worked with filmmakers such as Noah Baumbach, Pablo Larrain, and Mike Mills in recent years, Lady Bird is a self-autobiographical tale of a teenager at a Catholic high school. It's the kind of project that could be brilliant or disastrous, and thankfully, the buzz at Telluride indicates that we're in for a treat. Earlier today, A24 released the first trailer- watch it below!

I was definitely intrigued by Lady Bird, as I like Gerwig's presence on screen, but I wasn't entirely sold based on the concept and talent alone. But after watching this trailer, I'm all in. Lady Bird looks absolutely delightful, and I am so beyond excited for this movie. So many critics raved this weekend, and if the trailer is any indication of the overall tone and quality of the movie, it's very easy to see why. Lady Bird looks charming and witty, remarkably honest and yet laugh-out-loud funny in its own way. In short, it looks like an instant coming-of-age classic. And that cast is genuinely incredible. Saoirse Ronan, Laurie Metcalf, Lucas Hedges, Tracy Letts, Timothee Chalamet- that's like a who's who of indie darlings. All in all, it looks like the ever-fascinating A24 has a unique hit on their hands in the vein of last year's 20th Century Women (which starred Gerwig), and I could not be more thrilled to see how this turns out. A movie that I was mildly interested in before has shot to the top of my most anticipated list for the fall- thanks, marketing people!

Lady Bird will play at the Toronto International Film Festival before hitting theaters on November 10.
