'Cabin in the Woods' director Drew Goddard set to write and direct 'X-Force'

Drew Goddard is one of those genre directors who always seems to be on the cusp of hitting the jackpot, but just hasn't quite been able to make it there yet. Whether or not you consider The Cabin in the Woods to be a full-blown Joss Whedon property, it doesn't change the fact that Goddard was behind the camera for that groundbreaking project, catapulting him into the discussion of indie directors who could make the transition to blockbusters. But Goddard seemed to continue to fall short of getting his big break in the directorial realm, opting to stay behind-the-scenes, writing the screenplays for films like The Martian (which got him an Oscar nomination) and World War Z, as well as working as an executive producer on 10 Cloverfield Lane. But after a long hiatus, it appears that Goddard is finally working his way back into directing. Next year will see the release of Bad Times at the El Royale, a mysterious film with a cast led by Chris Hemsworth and Jeff Bridges, and yesterday, it was revealed that Goddard will be taking the helm for another hotly anticipated project.

According to Deadline's Mike Fleming, Drew Goddard will write and direct X-Force at 20th Century Fox, a film that will bring together Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool and Josh Brolin's Cable to lead a task force of R-rated mutants. X-Force is based on the popular comic book line that fans know and love, but for less comics-savvy moviegoers, this will operate as The Avengers for Fox's violent X-Men universe. Keep in mind that there are still plenty of X-Men movies left to hit the screen before we even get close to X-Force- next year will see the release of New Mutants, Deadpool 2, and Dark Phoenix. But I find their strategy so incredibly fascinating, as it's clear that they have wholeheartedly embraced mature, adult material, working as the opposite of Marvel Studios in every way. And if Goddard proved anything with The Cabin in the Woods, it's that he has a knack for crafting bloody violence to nerdy cinematic perfection. Goddard has a unique pop culture eye, and he's an inspired choice to serve as the chief creative talent behind this film. Fox is letting innovative filmmakers go wild with their new franchise direction, and I love that they're giving people like Goddard and David Leitch a big-budget opportunity to shine.

X-Force will likely hit theaters in 2019 or 2020.
