Brutal trailer for Lynne Ramsay's 'You Were Never Really Here' has arrived

If you can believe it, this was considered to be a down year for the Cannes Film Festival. Although this was a year that featured new films from Bong Joon-ho, Todd Haynes, Sofia Coppola, and Noah Baumbach, the fest was lacking the kind of title that garnered universal acclaim from critics and international cinephiles. Hell, even Happy End was met with a divisive reaction- and that's a film from Michael Haneke, the darling of Cannes. But in the twilight hours of the year's most important cinematic gathering, a film emerged that blew everyone away, acting as deliverance for a fest that was overshadowed by critical sparring and the Netflix controversy. Lynne Ramsay's You Were Never Really Here almost wasn't even ready for Cannes, but the director finished the project just in time to deliver a knockout punch in France. Ramsay's first film since 2011's We Need To Talk About Kevin (the director has had a rather plagued run in the years since) still doesn't have a release date, but earlier this week, a new international trailer gave us our first good look at the brutal action vehicle. Check it out below!

Sometimes he ends up getting overshadowed by showier actors, but I think it's fair to say that Joaquin Phoenix is one of the best performers working today. From his Oscar-nominated performance as Johnny Cash, to his understated work in Spike Jonze's Her, to the tremendous collaborations with Paul Thomas Anderson, Phoenix has consistently delivered brilliant work. I trust Phoenix's discretion when it comes to selecting projects, and his supposedly magnificent performance here is a big reason that I can't wait to see this film. But this is just a gut punch of a trailer, and everything about this film just seems so incredible. A simple, blunt plot, a brisk runtime of 85 minutes, a musical score from Jonny Greenwood (another Anderson collaborator), a tone that is described as a mix between Taxi Driver and Drive- all of the pieces are in place for me to fall head over heels in love with this movie. You Were Never Really Here won't resemble anything close to an easy watch, but this looks like a compact thrill ride for the ages. I imagine that Amazon Studios will hold this off until early 2018, as bloody action movies where people beat each other with hammers don't tend to win Oscars. But nonetheless, this is definitely one to keep an eye on.

You Were Never Really Here is shockingly not going to be playing at the Toronto International Film Festival, but it will make an appearance at the BFI London Festival. Look for it to make a splash across the pond.
