Excellent trailer debuts for Sean Baker's Cannes hit 'The Florida Project'

This was widely considered to be a down year at the Cannes Film Festival, as there seemed to be very few titles that garnered universal acclaim in the main competition section. New films from Yorgos Lanthimos, Todd Haynes, Bong Joon-ho, and more were surprisingly divisive, and there wasn't even much of a clear consensus on what would take home the fest's legendary Palme D'or. Lynne Ramsay's You Were Never Really Here turned things around a little bit in the final moments of the festival, but if we're being completely honest, the most popular film at Cannes wasn't even eligible for its biggest award. Yes, I'm talking about The Florida Project, Sean Baker's follow-up to his critically acclaimed indie Tangerine. Even though the film only had a slot in the Director's Fortnight section, it seemed to be the one film that received unanimous praise from critics and festivalgoers. Indie maverick A24 scooped Baker's film up for an award season release, putting it in a position to potentially be this year's Moonlight. Yesterday, the first trailer was released- watch it below!

I had heard so many great things about The Florida Project out of Cannes, but as someone who is unfamiliar with Sean Baker's work, I wasn't sure what to make of it. A24's involvement got me excited, but with this trailer, I'm fully sold. This film looks breathtakingly gorgeous, somehow balancing a fantastical element with a sense of pain and grit. Everyone has been talking about Willem Dafoe in this, and even by this brief first look, I know exactly why- he's a Best Supporting Actor contender for sure. The idea of a film set in the motels on the outskirts of Walt Disney World in Orlando is simply an appealing concept to me, but it seems like Baker has populated his film with fascinating characters and a true sense of cinematic wonder. The hard R rating indicates that we're going to see something intense and dark, but The Florida Project looks uplifting and charming as well. This trailer really drew me into the world of humor and heartbreak in this film, and I truly can't wait to see the final result.

The Florida Project hits theaters on October 6 in limited release.
