After rave reviews at festival premiere, A24 releases new trailer for 'It Comes at Night'

It Comes at Night is one of my most anticipated films of the summer, and I think that most movie fans would say the same thing. The horror film is coming from Trey Edward Shults (director of Krisha, an acclaimed indie that I still haven't seen yet) and A24, a studio that has been consistently excellent in its output of genre and midnight movie fare. While some more observant cinephiles had this film on their radar months ago, it first came to my attention thanks to an incredible teaser, one that astonishingly portrayed an atmosphere of dread and fear. And judging by the reaction to the film's world premiere this weekend, that trailer wasn't a fluke. Despite some speculation of a Cannes bow, It Comes at Night premiered at Oregon's first annual Overlook Film Festival to rave reviews on Saturday- people went absolutely wild for this movie. Time Out's Joshua Rothkopf awarded the film 5 stars, Indiewire's Eric Kohn called it a "paranoid headtrip," and many other outlets had nothing but praise for the A-grade chiller. To capitalize on that buzz, A24 has released the full trailer for the film- check it out below!

Based on the initial trailer for the film, I had no idea what It Comes at Night was really going to be about. After this full sneak peek, the concept has become a bit more clear, but if the reaction of those who attended the screening is to be believed, there's still a good deal of ambiguity to Shults' horror flick. It Comes at Night looks like a complex, nerve-shredding blend of psychological terror, post-apocalyptic survivalist drama, and human conflict, which is something that most mainstream horror films wouldn't dare to explore. On the surface, it looks like 10 Cloverfield Lane without the sci-fi, but I have a feeling that Shults is going to give us so much more than that. I love that this film looks both ambitious and contained, a chamber piece that threatens a world of danger around corner. In addition, Joel Edgerton is one of the best actors on the planet, and I can't wait to see what he does with a part that seems to be fascinating and complicated in just about every way. Everything I've seen from It Comes at Night indicates that we're going to see a terrifying masterpiece, and in a year where we've seen plenty of unique genre features, I'm hoping that this one delivers on its potential.

It Comes at Night will open on June 9, during the heart of the summer movie season. I'm hoping for one hell of a breakout hit.
