New films from Sofia Coppola, Todd Haynes, and Bong Joon-ho lead the 2017 Cannes Film Festival lineup
The Cannes Film Festival is always one of the biggest events of the year for cinephiles, and this year, speculation was running rampant about which films could potentially be selected for a highly-coveted slot at the festival. Over the last month, the rumors and discussion became overwhelming to a certain extent, as pretty much every film set to debut in the next year was reported to be in the mix for a Cannes debut. In addition to that, the festival broke its tradition of revealing its Opening Night film in advance, a move that makes sense in hindsight. But despite all of the rumors about appearances by Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk, Luc Besson's Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, and Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant, the Cannes lineup turned out to be pretty much as expected. Sure, there were a few surprises, but I can't say I was astonished that any of these films made the cut. This morning, Cannes President Pierre Lescure and Executive Officer Thierry Fremaux announced the first wave of titles for Cannes 2017. Check out the list below!

In addition to these competition titles, David Lynch will unveil the first two episodes of his new Twin Peaks series, Taylor Sheridan will bring Wind River to the Croisette, and John Cameron Mitchell's How to Talk to Girls at Parties will be screening in an Out of Competition slot. Beyond that, there really isn't much to note. This is certainly an appealing lineup of films, but after all the hype, I was expecting a bit more. From the competition list, there are a few films that jump out to me- Wonderstruck, Okja, The Beguiled, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, and You Were Never Really Here. Four of those made it on my Most Anticipated list to start the year, so the fact that they felt inevitable going into today's announcement doesn't make it any less exciting. But I'm hoping that Fremaux adds at least a couple more titles in the coming weeks. There were some very intriguing films that didn't make the cut, and I'm hoping that they might slip in at the last moment. Nonetheless, this should be another great year at Cannes, and I can't wait to see what breaks out at the festival this year.
