For a movie that will serve as a sequel to one of the most successful films of 2016, Deadpool 2 has had a surprisingly hard time getting off the ground. Sure, Fox released a weird little teaser trailer in front of the highly successful Logan, but they haven't even managed to get production started yet. First, there was a dispute between star Ryan Reynolds and director Tim Miller, who was quickly replaced by John Wick and Atomic Blonde filmmaker David Leitch. Since that directorial switch, the studio has had an incredibly difficult time finding the right actor to play Cable, the much-touted co-star of the sequel. Reynolds announced that Atlanta star Zazie Beetz would play fan favorite Domino, but rumors continued to swirl on who would play Cable. The initial rumor was Stranger Things star David Harbour, but that was quickly shot down in favor of Michael Shannon, the beloved, Oscar-nominated actor. Word was mum on the Deadpool front for a while, but last week, Fox finally confirmed who will be playing the time-traveling mutant. It's not Harbour. It's not Shannon. It's Josh Brolin.
The Hollywood Reporter exclusively reported the news last Wednesday (I'm super late on this one), which was quickly confirmed by the actor himself. According to THR, Brolin surprisingly became a contender for the role at the last minute, snagging a four-film deal with Fox to play Nathan Summers. Brolin's casting became instantly controversial, as the actor already plays Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thanos has been teased as the big bad of the MCU, and he'll make his first full appearance in next summer's Avengers: Infinity War. However, with the Thanos storyline expected to come to a close with 2019's untitled Avengers 4, Brolin should have plenty of time to make his move over to the Fox Marvel-verse. Brolin is a terrific actor, having delivered consistently terrific performances in films like Hail, Caesar!, Inherent Vice, Sicario, and No Country for Old Men. Something about this feels a little anti-climatic in the aftermath of the Michael Shannon rumors, but there's no question that Brolin is a great pick. Deadpool 2 will likely hit theaters in 2018.
