I cannot wait for everybody to finally see Free Fire. It feels like it has been forever since I saw Ben Wheatley's rollicking action spectacle, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival before going on to play at the BFI London Festival and South by Southwest. But after a long publicity run, the shootout for the ages is finally arriving in theaters. Wheatley's film debuted in British cinemas on March 31, and it will be released by A24 in America on April 21. If all goes well, I'm certainly expecting this film to take Wheatley to another level. It's funny, stylish, and wholly entertaining- the kind of movie that turns a director into a superstar. After years of living in the cult sphere, Wheatley is ready to break into the mainstream. He'll be tackling Freakshift next, a film that is described as an ensemble picture about cops who hunt nocturnal monsters. Alicia Vikander signed on to lead the cast a few weeks ago, and today, another major casting announcement gives us one more reason to get excited for Wheatley's next project.
According to Deadline, Armie Hammer, who damn near steals the show in Free Fire, has joined the cast of Freakshift as Vikander's love interest. Hammer has been stuck in mediocre blockbusters for several years, but he's finally breaking out in a big way. He's nothing short of astounding in Free Fire, and there's a good chance that he'll receive an Oscar nomination for Call Me By Your Name. Hammer is a star in the making, and he's honestly one of the most charismatic actors working today. Wheatley obviously knows how to get the best out of Hammer, so reuniting the two for Freakshift makes perfect sense. The film will also bring Hammer and Vikander back together, as the two stars both appeared in Guy Ritchie's underrated spy gem The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Overall, this is a perfect move, and I hope this is indicative of a long and healthy relationship with Wheatley. This is spectacular in just about every way.
