'Stranger Things' star David Harbour is Fox's top choice for Cable in 'Deadpool 2'

Deadpool 2 is finally coming together, and it won't be long before we start hearing some concrete information on the status of the sequel. If you head to theaters to check out the excellent, masterful Logan this week, you'll also get a quick short featuring the Merc with a Mouth, which serves to remind audiences that Deadpool will be returning to theaters shortly. For a sequel to a movie that made $783 million worldwide, the road to production has been surprisingly difficult for Deadpool 2. First, there was conflict between star Ryan Reynolds and director Tim Miller, who left the project and was later replaced by John Wick's David Leitch. Beyond that central battle, there has also been the question of who will play Cable in the sequel, as that character was confirmed to appear in the film during the post-credits sequence of the original. And after an endless barrage of bogus rumors over the past several months, we finally have some solid information on the potential casting.

While it isn't confirmed and the two parties are not currently engaged in talks, The Wrap's Umberto Gonzalez (who also accurately predicted this weekend's Deadpool short) reported on Thursday that Stranger Things star David Harbour is being considered by Fox for the role. According to Gonzalez, he has screen-tested and is certainly "in the running" to play the time-traveling mutant. Harbour, who also appeared in End of Watch, Suicide Squad, and Black Mass, seems like a natural fit for the part. Although his time may be totally consumed by the hit Netflix show, I have a feeling that this is going to come together. It's a more realistic pick than many of the "rumored" choices over the past few months, and the fact that Deadpool and Cable creator Rob Liefeld came out in favor of the pick this week is an encouraging sign. With Fox likely aiming for a 2018 release date, we can certainly expect to hear more on this soon. But for now, the potential casting of Harbour is an exciting development.
