The DC Extended Universe is at a critical point right now, and what happens in the next year will determine the fate of Warner Bros.' massive experiment. If Wonder Woman and Justice League are successful, well-liked films, Marvel may finally have some competition. But if those two movies end up being disappointing misfires, the DCEU will be doomed to be nothing more than a string of loosely connected solo movies before everything eventually falls apart. With The Flash in total disarray, there's a lot surprisingly riding on Aquaman, which will mark the first solo adventure for the King of Atlantis. Directed by horror mastermind James Wan, Aquaman has the benefit of a solid cast, a bold new universe, and a brilliant filmmaker at the helm. Much of the anticipation for the film will undoubtedly ride on how fans respond to Jason Momoa's portrayal of Arthur Curry in next year's Justice League, but at this moment, fan excitement is high. Earlier this week, another burst of casting info was revealed for the film, and it's a move that could really excite some fans.
On Monday, James Wan revealed on his Twitter page that Patrick Wilson will play King Orm in the film. Orm is Aquaman's jealous half-brother, and in the comics, he is also known as the villainous Ocean Master. Wilson is a regular in Wan's films, having appeared in both Conjuring films and both Insidious films that Wan directed. Wilson is great at playing sympathetic, everyday guys, so it'll be an interesting twist to see him take on such a villainous role. I'm not at all familiar with the Aquaman comics, so I have zero concept of who the Ocean Master is or whether Wilson is a good fit for the role. I can only judge based on Wilson's past performances, and his previous collaborations with Wan. Measured by those two standards, I'm excited to see the two reunite for such a massive project. With Momoa, Amber Heard, and Willem Dafoe, the cast for Aquaman was already in pretty good shape, but Wilson provides an excellent added boost. With Wan behind the camera, I must say, Aquaman is one of most intriguing of the upcoming DCEU films. This could be something really special.
Aquaman will open on October 5, 2018, but the character will first appear in Zack Snyder's Justice League, which will hit theaters on November 17, 2017.
