The Golden Globes announced their nominees for the best of the year in film earlier this week, and this morning, it was the Screen Actors Guild's turn to pick their favorites. The SAG Awards are always another important pit stop along the road to the Academy Awards, along with the Producers, Writers, and Directors Guilds. The nominees this year were quite interesting, with some picks that baffled awards prognosticators. Check out the nominees for the 23rd annual SAG Awards below!

Alright, so here are a few notes from this morning's announcements:
-No La La Land for Best Ensemble
Certainly the most shocking pick of the day was the omission of La La Land, the odds-on favorite for Best Picture, in the Outstanding Cast category. On paper, this is a huge miss for Damien Chazelle's film. No film has won Best Picture without a nomination in this category since 1995's Braveheart, so La La Land could be in deep trouble. But here's the thing- the movie really only has two actors (Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone), both of whom received nominations in their respective categories. There are barely any supporting roles in La La Land, and none of them get any definition or development whatsoever. So if SAG members voted strictly based on the idea of the category, then it's not easy to understand why the film missed. Nonetheless, La La Land is on shakier ground than before, and Lionsgate needs to push this campaign into high gear.
-Lots of love for Florence Foster Jenkins and Captain Fantastic
Matt Ross' Captain Fantastic was perhaps the biggest surprise of the day, receiving nominations for Best Cast and Best Actor for Viggo Mortensen. It's a good film, but not one that I expected to resonate in the Oscar race. Mortensen is currently 7th on Gold Derby's charts, but after today's upset nomination, it'll be a closer race between Tom Hanks, Joel Edgerton, and the Captain Fantastic star for that final slot. As of now, the rest feel like locks. As for Florence Foster Jenkins, Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant both were nominated for their performances. After fading for a long period of time, it looks like the film is back with a vengeance. Streep topped Isabelle Huppert, Ruth Negga, and Annette Bening for a nomination, and while that was far from the weirdest thing to happen in the Best Actress category today, it still could be worth noting as the race draws to a close.
-Huge boost for Hidden Figures
Theo Melfi's Hidden Figures looked all but done for, but today, it picked up the boost that it needed. While it's tough to predict if the Best Cast nomination will translate into a Best Picture nod, this was still a good day for the film and for Octavia Spencer, who picked up her second nomination at a major show this week. Taraji P. Henson and Kevin Costner both surprisingly missed the cut, but Fox still has to count this as a victory for their historical drama.
-Emily Blunt for Best Actress?
Emily Blunt is fine in The Girl on the Train, but that movie is all kinds of ridiculous and awful. I don't know how she got a nomination, and to be honest, this only lowers the credibility of the SAG.
