Intense and thrilling trailer for 'Dunkirk' teases Christopher Nolan's latest epic

In modern Hollywood, most movies become hits because of a franchise name, some kind of brand recognition or famous source material. But somehow, Christopher Nolan has become the exception to the rule. After starting his career with a couple of low-key crime dramas, Nolan took on Batman, crafting the definitive take on the character with his Dark Knight legend. In the years since, Nolan has used his clout and his passionate supporters to get ambitious, epic projects off the ground. Let's face it- in the hands of any other filmmaker, Inception and Interstellar do not become massive global phenomenons. Nolan has the magic touch, and it's fair to say that he's one of the most powerful directors in the business. After his aforementioned 2014 space odyssey, there were many questions about where the director would go next. Would he venture back into space? Perhaps a smaller film? Maybe return to DC Comics? Instead, Nolan decided to tackle a World War II film in the form of Dunkirk. The story of the evacuation that saved the British when they were on the ropes, Dunkirk has the potential to be a spectacular, old-fashioned war extravaganza like we haven't seen in a long time. After debuting a quick teaser trailer this summer, Warner Bros. has now released a longer, better look at the film. Check out the trailer for Dunkirk below!

As I have admitted willingly on this site many times before, I am a full-fledged Christopher Nolan fanboy. He's one of my favorite directors, and I love the fact that he's maybe the only filmmaker who continually makes films on a such a grand scale. His ambition is unparalleled, and when it was announced that he would make a World War II film, I thought that it was an interesting, bold career choice. The story of Dunkirk isn't necessarily a story of triumph- it is one of survival at a very bleak moment. Nolan has captured that very well in this trailer, and I simply adore the idea of a massive ensemble picture. Give me three hours of Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, and Cillian Murphy doing their thing, and I will be so happy. The filmmaking and cinematography on display in this trailer is nothing short of astonishing, and some of the action looks absolutely breathtaking. We're going to get a World War II movie on a scale that we've quite possibly never seen before from one of our greatest living directors, and if that doesn't excite you, I don't know what will.

Dunkirk will debut on July 21, 2017 in theaters and in IMAX. Special 35mm and 70mm engagements will be occurring all over the country. In addition, a prologue for Dunkirk will be playing in front of select showings of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story this weekend.
