Amazing new trailer debuts for Marvel's 'Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2'

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has completely changed the game in Hollywood in almost every conceivable way. Franchises and sequels are no longer the limit- studios are now seeking shared universes, focusing on world-building, inter-connectivity, and mining famous iconography in the hopes of finding the box office Holy Grail. Marvel made it look effortless thanks to the precise planning of executive Kevin Feige and a talented organization of actors and filmmakers. What they have done is nothing short of revolutionary, and there have been an abundance of great films to come from the MCU. But there's one that sticks out from the pack as Marvel's strongest singular achievement. In 2014, the studio had two films on their slate- Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy. The former was a sequel that directly impacted the future of the Avengers series, but the latter was a huge gamble. A risky, high-concept sci-fi film with a cast that featured a talking raccoon and a giant tree doesn't exactly shout "box office gold!" and Marvel was going to have their work cut out for them to make it a hit. Thanks to the marketing genius of Feige and the directorial pizzazz of James Gunn, Guardians ended up being the biggest hit of the summer. Now, almost three years later, the gang is back together for another adventure. Check out the second teaser trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2.

Even though Guardians of the Galaxy was based off a comic book series, let's be honest here- Marvel pretty much created a juggernaut franchise from scratch with this series. The original film was remarkably successful mainly because of the principle characters, including the roguish Star Lord (Chris Pratt), the trigger-happy Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper), the endlessly charming Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel), the fierce Gamora (Zoe Saldana), and the hopelessly blunt Drax (Dave Bautista). The story in Guardians came second to the humor and the big, crowd-pleasing elements, which also included a killer soundtrack of 70s hits. The first trailer for Vol. 2 relied primarily on familiarity, giving us a brief look at the whole gang in action, while setting the tone with Blue Swede's "Hooked on a Feeling" (which served as the original's anthem). This second teaser is more impressive and engaging, blending together some new elements with a ton of indelible character moments. I love the use of Sweet's "Fox on the Run" and the two main comedic bits involving Drax and Rocket/Baby Groot, respectively, are dynamite. I love what Gunn does with these characters, and I can't wait to see what lies ahead. For me, this is one of the rare instances where the story and villain won't bug me all that much- I'm just excited to have fun with the Guardians once again.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5, 2017.
