Clint Eastwood is 86 years old, and while the Hollywood icon has retired from acting, he's still directing movies like it's nobody's business. In fact, Eastwood's biggest success came just under two years ago in the form of American Sniper, his biopic of sharpshooter Chris Kyle. The Bradley Cooper-starred film became a bona fide sensation, grossing $350 million in the US (enough to become the highest-grossing film of 2014) and garnering 6 Oscars nominations, along with a win for sound editing. It'll be tough to replicate that success ever again, but there's a good chance that Eastwood's next film, Sully, will be a major hit in its own right. Sully is the first biopic of Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, the pilot and 21st century American hero who miraculously landed a jumbo jet on the Hudson river when disaster struck mid-flight. With Tom Hanks in the titular role, a prime Oscar release date, and Eastwood behind the camera, there's a good amount of excitement surrounding this one. Check out the first trailer below!
Eastwood's directorial outings have always been a mixed bag (especially of late), but I'm fairly confident that Sully will be a triumph for the legendary filmmaker. This is a terrific trailer, selling the drama, the action, and most importantly, the performance of Tom Hanks. You cannot underestimate how integral Hanks is to the success of this film. People are interested in a story about the "Miracle on the Hudson," but it takes the right actor to get butts in seats, and Hanks will certainly do that. Hanks has had his fair share of misfires as of late (A Hologram for the King, regrettably), and yet, he's the determining factor in whether Sully is a critical and commercial hit. Judging by this trailer, it looks like he pulls it off and I'm excited to see what he can do with this character. Looking at the aftermath of the wild crash is an interesting approach to take, and the similarities with Robert Zemeckis' Flight seem to be numerous (despite a much different outcome to the story). Although I did have my problems with American Sniper, it did show Eastwood's enormous strength in breaking down modern historical figures and their psyche, which is a skill I hope he brings to this film. It looks great, and if I was gonna put money down, a premiere at Toronto or Venice is probably in the cards.
