As I noted just over a week ago, the Fast and Furious franchise is racing forward. Despite the tragic death of leading man Paul Walker, we'll be getting three more Fast films over the next five years that will close out this massive series. With total worldwide box office grosses over $3.8 billion, why wouldn't they keep the momentum going? The only question remains where they'll go with the story from here (although, let's be honest- you're not seeing Fast and Furious for the complicated and thought-provoking plot). Furious 7 was a mess of subplots and loose ends, from Kurt Russell's Mr. Nobody to the McGuffin of the God's Eye device, that scattered the future of the franchise. It solved some of these stories in its conclusion setpiece, and yet, it left some room for Russell and Jason Statham's Deckard Shaw to return in a sequel. Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Dwayne Johnson, Ludacris and Tyrese Gibson will also be coming back for another round of vehicular warfare in New York, but there's gotta be some new blood in the cast. And this time around, it looks like we could be getting one of the most famous actresses in the world.
According to Deadline, Charlize Theron is in talks to play the lead villain in Fast 8. The Mad Max: Fury Road actress has an offer on the table and Universal is eager to have her sign, but nothing is confirmed yet (per Variety). Nothing is known about Theron's role at this point either beyond the fact that it's a villainous character. But honest, how much more do you need to know? It's Charlize Theron playing a villain in a Fast and Furious movie. She's a great actress and she created an instant feminist action icon in Furiosa last year. I love everything about this casting. However, I have one idea/condition for director F. Gary Gray and the Fast 8 filmmakers- if you're gonna bring in Theron, you gotta have her do more than just one movie. By all accounts, these final three Furious movies will close out the series and allow for a satisfying conclusion. Why not bring in one of the best actresses on the planet for a full, complete story arc? I don't want another one-and-done like we got with Luke Evans and presumably Statham (he'll be back, but he won't be the lead). Bring Theron in and do it big. If they play it well enough, this will be brilliant. Fast 8 hits theaters on April 14, 2017.
