Of all the filmmakers that truly broke out in 2015, Ryan Coogler was probably the director who put his name firmly on the map as a superstar. Creed was a rousing success in every possible way- a thrilling, emotional journey that reminded viewers of why they fell in love with the Rocky franchise in the first place. Sylvester Stallone and Michael B. Jordan carried the weight of the film, but much of the credit has to go to Coogler. The writer/director crafted such a phenomenal story out of a franchise that was running on empty and he proved that he has a deep understanding of what makes characters and stories work. After Fruitvale Station and his Rocky resurgence, Coogler is one of the most powerful young directors in Hollywood. While there is plenty of talk about a sequel to Creed that is still ongoing, Coogler definitely has had plenty of other enticing directorial offers on the table. The young filmmaker has now accepted one of those offers and given Marvel fans plenty to be excited about.
Coogler has officially signed on to direct Marvel's Black Panther, which will star Chadwick Boseman. After months of rumors, Coogler's agreement to direct was announced yesterday by Marvel Studios. Here's what Marvel studios head Kevin Feige had to say about the hiring.
"We are fortunate to have such an esteemed filmmaker join the Marvel family," said producer Kevin Feige. "The talents Ryan showcased in his first two films easily made him our top choice to direct 'Black Panther.' Many fans have waited a long time to see Black Panther in his own film, and with Ryan we know we've found the perfect director to bring T'Challa's story to life."
Coogler is an undeniably talented filmmaker, and I'm actually pretty pumped to see Black Panther come to life on the big screen. I am a bit worried about the Marvel machine continuing to suck up many promising young directors, but with Coogler, I feel like it's the right choice. He has an eye for grit and action, and that's something that the Marvel Cinematic Universe desperately needs. After Creed, one of my favorite films of 2015, I know he'll do a terrific job. Black Panther will debut on February 16, 2018, but first, the character will debut in Joe and Anthony Russo's Captain America: Civil War, set to hit theaters on May 6, 2016.
