Steven Spielberg's 'Ready Player One' to hit theaters on December 15, 2017

Steven Spielberg is still one of the best directors in Hollywood today, but for years, I've been wanting him to take on another big science fiction project. In recent years, he has worked mainly in the drama (Lincoln, War Horse) and adventure (The Adventures of Tintin) genres, with the days of A.I., Minority Report and even Jurassic Park long gone. Not to say that I haven't enjoyed his work- with the exception of Tintin, I've found much to love in Spielberg's recent work. But when I heard the news that Spielberg was going to take on Ready Player One, I got really, really excited. One of the best filmmakers in American history taking on one of the most ambitious projects in recent years? Count me in. Spielberg tried to work out Robopocalypse, but the technology just wasn't there yet. However, the innovation required to set up Ready Player One is there now, and Warner Bros. and Spielberg should be able to put a visionary film on screen.

Today, Warner Bros. revealed that Ready Player One will hit theaters on December 15, 2017, which should position the film as both a big blockbuster and a major awards player. Along with Star Wars: Episode VIII and Edgar Wright's Baby Driver, this is one of my most anticipated films of 2017. With a screenplay by Zak Penn, the novel's author Ernest Cline, and Eric Eason, Ready Player One will tell the story of a virtual world called OASIS, and the competition that ensues to fight for the creator's fortune. When Spielberg was announced as the director, Deadline wrote a lengthy piece about how this film will utilize technology that will push cinematic reality to new levels. Very exciting stuff indeed. No casting information is available at this point, and with Spielberg's Bridge of Spies set to hit on October 16, followed by The BFG next July, I wouldn't guess that pre-production will begin on this film until early to mid 2016. But out of all of Spielberg's upcoming projects, this is the one that has the opportunity to be a true classic.
