Scarlett Johannson is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, thanks to her success in Marvel Cinematic Universe, where she plays female assassin Black Widow. Johannson also saw success this past summer with Lucy, Luc Besson's action flick about expanding brain capacities and other mind-bending scientific concepts. Johannson has done a terrific job with her action-oriented roles, so it's really not surprising that she's planning on doing more action films for her future projects. In addition to her voice role as Kaa in Jon Favreau's The Jungle Book and an unspecified role in the Coen's Hail Caesar!, Johannson has now signed on to star in Dreamworks' adaptation of the highly popular anime, Ghost in the Shell.
According to Variety and many other sources, Johannson has now officially signed on to star in Ghost in the Shell, which chronicles the story of a cyborg cop's effort to bring down a powerful and dangerous hacker. The film will be directed by Snow White and the Hunstman director Rupert Sanders and Steven Spielberg is on board as a producer. Paramount also has the option to come on as a co-distributor, according to Variety. All in all, this is exciting news to me. I'm interested to see what Hollywood does with all the great anime content that they have at their fingertips and Ghost in the Shell seems like a step in the right direction. Although Edge of Tomorrow wasn't the smashing success that many had hoped for this past summer, that was entirely the fault of Warner Bros. and their scattered, messy marketing campaign. If Dreamworks makes a good film with Ghost in the Shell and markets it well, this will certainly be a hit. No release date is set, but I'm not expecting to see this one until 2017.
