After months of speculation about who would play Dr. Stephen Strange in Marvel's 2016 adaptation of the comic book series, we finally received confirmation today. Jared Leto and Joaquin Phoenix were initially rumored for the role, but the rumors didn't follow them around like they did Benedict Cumberbatch. The beloved British actor, who became a heartthrob after his role on BBC's Sherlock, was involved in casting discussions for a while, but always avoided discussing it. Well, he can finally discuss it openly, as Marvel officially confirmed yesterday that Cumberbatch will be playing Dr. Strange.
Marvel announced the news on their official Twitter page and Marvel president Kevin Feige released a statement as well. "Stephen Strange's story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity. In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character," said Feige. Although many seemingly thought that Cumberbatch would be announced at October's Marvel event, the deal took a very long time to get going. However, fans were definitely very excited that Cumberbatch was taking on the role and I'm happy as well. He's an incredibly talented actor and I think that Cumberbatch is the perfect actor to anchor Marvel's new set of magical films. We're still a long way out from this one, but it's definitely an intriguing title. Doctor Strange will be written by Jon Spaithts, directed by Scott Derrickson and will hit theaters on November 4, 2016.
