Some rather shocking news came from Warner Bros. today, as it was announced that the studio would be moving the Wachowski siblings' $150 million blockbuster Jupiter Ascending from its current release date of July 18, 2014 to February 6, 2015. That's some incredibly unexpected news in my opinion, but it seems like a lot of people expected this. The film has tracked poorly and has been predetermined as the big bomb of the summer by many box office pundits, so a February release date might be safer. However, many consider February to be a "dumping ground" for films that aren't very good, so that has many people worried that Jupiter Ascending might be a total misfire.
I've been excited for this movie since the first trailer was released, but many have thought that the film looked rather bizarre. I'm honestly not surprised that the studio has moved the date, but the move from July to February is drastic and frightening. Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis should be able to drum up some business, but I guess the studio doesn't think so. However, keep in mind that Warner Bros. also released The LEGO Movie in February, which ended up being a big hit. So I guess there is still hope for this film. Then again, The Monuments Men was released in February at the same time and ended up sucking, so there's always that.
