Marvel has been going through a trying time lately. First, acclaimed director Edgar Wright left Ant-Man, a project he had been working on passionately for years. His departure was due to a clash with Marvel over the watered down script that wasn't at all his vision of the film. Then, Marvel sought Anchorman 2 director Adam McKay for the film, but after heavy negotiations, McKay declined. All of that drama has caused many Marvel fans to be skeptical of the project at this point. Odds are that Marvel won't be able to get the film out in time for its planned July 2015 release date and unless Marvel suddenly changes their mind and rehires Edgar Wright, the project may never get off the ground. With all that drama going on with Ant-Man (Marvel is still looking for a director), the studio has turned to another one of their risky upcoming films: Dr. Strange.
Dr. Strange is a project that has been floating around at Marvel for years and it seems like studio chief Kevin Feige really wants to get this film made. After a lot of speculation, it appears that it'll be Scott Derrickson (Sinister, Deliver Us From Evil) taking the reigns on Dr. Strange. While this news isn't official just quite yet, the acclaimed horror director tweeted out this picture earlier today with the caption "My next movie will be strange."
Seems like Derrickson is officially signed on to the project. I'm excited about that. Derrickson directed the acclaimed horror movie Sinister and also helmed Deliver Us From Evil, which comes out in July. It'll be interesting to see if he puts a bit of a horror spin on Dr. Strange. For now, there's no other word on the film. It will likely be released in 2016 or 2017.
