'Maleficent' soars with $70 million, 'X-Men' takes a steep drop and 'A Million Ways' flops at the weekend box office
May was a slight disappointment box office-wise, but it ended with a decent bang. Disney's Maleficent ruled the box office this weekend with $70 million. That's a relatively impressive total for the $180 million live-action blockbuster which has received mixed reviews from critics. The Angelina Jolie-starred film got an "A" Cinemascore from audiences which indicates that word-of-mouth might carry the movie ahead. I'll get around to seeing this movie eventually, but expect a review around June 10. In addition to its strong domestic opening, Maleficent grossed $100.6 million overseas for a total worldwide opening of $170.6 million. That's pretty solid for this film and I expect it to finish with around $500 million worldwide.
Fox's X-Men: Days of Future Past finished in second place with $32.6 million, which is about a 64% drop from last weekend. That's a steep drop for a great film that received an "A" Cinemascore and finished around 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film has now grossed $162 million in the US and has reached $500.2 million worldwide. That's an incredibly impressive total and I wouldn't be surprised if the film managed to climb its way to $1 Billion. However, if domestic grosses continue to falter, I doubt that Days of Future Past will be able to reach that magic number.
The first major misfire of the summer came this weekend in the form of Universal's A Million Ways to Die in the West. The comedy, which starred Seth MacFarlane (he also directed the movie), grossed $17 million this weekend for a third place finish. That's a far cry from Ted's $54.4 million opening, which is sort of surprising given that MacFarlane has only grown in popularity. However, the film received poor reviews and a lackluster "B" Cinemascore from audiences which indicates that this movie will fade quickly into oblivion. This movie will likely hurt MacFarlane a little bit right now, but Ted 2 is coming out next summer, which should be a nice bounce back for him.
Godzilla finished in fourth place this weekend and continued its steep plunge, grossing only $12.2 million. The monster movie has now grossed $174.6 million, which is relatively disappointing given the film's great $93.1 million opening. Godzilla will likely crawl its way to $200 million domestically. However, the film has taken in a strong $374.6 million worldwide, which should justify a sequel. Blended finished in fifth place this weekend, taking in an additional $8.4 million. The Adam Sandler comedy has now grossed $29.6 million, which is pretty disappointing.
Neighbors finished in sixth place, taking in an additional $7.7 million. The comedy smash has now grossed $128.6 million, which is very impressive. If you haven't seen the film yet, I encourage you to give it a shot. Sony's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has continued to hang on at the box office, finishing in seventh place this weekend with $3.7 million. The superhero sequel has now grossed $192.7 million. It should finish with just around $200 million.
Disney's Million Dollar Arm finished in eighth place this weekend with $3.7 million, taking a steep 47% drop after a stellar hold last weekend. The film has now grossed $28 million. Chef continued its strong run this weekend as well, grossing $2 million in ninth place to raise its total to $6.9 million. And finally, The Other Woman rounded out the top ten with $1.4 million, which raises the film's total to $81.1 million.
Next weekend sees the release of The Fault in Our Stars and Edge of Tomorrow. Here are my predictions:
