Josh Trank to direct an untitled 'Star Wars' spin-off film

Recently, Disney signed on Godzilla director Gareth Edwards to helm a Star Wars spin-off movie. Even though I wasn't in love with Godzilla, I appreciated Edwards' directorial touch and was very excited to see him do a Star Wars movie. However, it seems like Disney is very much planning ahead as they just announced today that the director of Chronicle and the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot, Josh Trank, will be also directing a Star Wars spin-off movie. Here's the official press release from Disney.

"In addition to the episodes of a new Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm and Disney continue development of multiple stand-alone movies that will offer new stories beyond the core saga. The newest director to come on board is Josh Trank.

"We're thrilled to welcome Josh into the family," says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. "He is such an incredible talent and has a great imagination and a sense of innovation. That makes him perfectly suited to Star Wars, and for this new slate of movies that reach beyond the core characters and storylines of Episodes I through IX."

Trank states, "The magic of the Star Wars Universe has defined my entire childhood. The opportunity to expand on that experience for future generations is the most incredible dream of all time."

Trank captured imaginations worldwide with his critically lauded directorial debut Chronicle, a fresh and engaging take on the superhero genre. Trank is currently at work on The Fantastic Four for 20th Century Fox."

Even though I never saw Chronicle, this is a movie that excites me. Disney is really filling the Star Wars universe with talented directors all under the control of JJ Abrams and Kathleen Kennedy. If the studio doesn't get too involved, these spin-offs could be quite fantastic. Edwards, Trank and Abrams are all talented, so this is going to be very interesting. Likely, this spin-off movie will be released in 2017.
