After a couple of massive, record-breaking weekends, the box office cooled down as the only high-profile release flopped. Ride Along led the box office with $21.2 million, which raised its total to $75.5 million. The Kevin Hart action comedy dropped only 49% this weekend, which is a pretty light drop. Ride Along will almost certainly cross $100 million at this point. The film has its moments, but unfortunately it's incredibly cliched and ignorant. If you haven't seen it, I don't recommend it. Lone Survivor placed in second this weekend with $12.9 million which is a relatively light drop from last weekend. The action drama has stayed strong through the last few weeks and has now grossed $93.9 million. Look for Lone Survivor to finish with over $125 million.
The Nut Job finished in 3rd place this weekend with $12.1 million, which raised its total to $40 million. The Nut Job only took a small hit this weekend and will probably stay strong throughout this upcoming weekend. However, once The LEGO Movie rolls along, you can forget about The Nut Job. Fourth place belonged to Frozen, which grossed $9.1 million this weekend. The Disney animated comedy has grossed $347.8 million so far and should finish with over $370 million by the end of its run. Frozen really has had an amazing run. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit placed in fifth this weekend with $9 million, which was enough to raise its total to $30.4 million. While this latest Jack Ryan hasn't been a disaster at the box office, I still doubt that Paramount will greenlight a sequel.
The lone new release this weekend was I, Frankenstein which finished in sixth place with $8.6 million. The $65 million fantasy was the latest mid-budget film to flop at the box office. I, Frankenstein also received a "B" Cinemascore, which means that audiences will likely not stick around for this one much longer. Why anyone greenlit that film, we will never know. The only Oscar film that has stayed near the top of the box office has been American Hustle, which finished in seventh place with $7 million. That's enough to raise American Hustle's total to $127 million. That's a phenomenal total for the film and it will only go higher from here.
The Wolf of Wall Street has also stayed strong at the box office and finished in eighth this weekend with $5.4 million. The raunchy comedy has now grossed $98.5 million and will certainly cross $100 million by the end of the week. August: Osage County finished in ninth place with $5 million and has now grossed $26.5 million. The family dramedy has seen strong success at the box office so far, but I don't see this film going much higher than $50 million. And Devil's Due rounded out the top ten with $2.7 million which was enough to raise the film's total to $12.9 million.
Next weekend sees the release of Labor Day and That Awkward Moment. Here are my early predictions:
