The Descendants is a simple, but fantastic film. It features an all-star cast, a smartly written script, and memorable characters that you come to care about. The Descendants is a great movie. There are few flaws that I can point out and say that it took away from the film.
The Descendants stars George Clooney as Matt King, a Hawaiian landowner with virtually entire islands who is one of the many cousins who are all descendants of the man who originally owned the land. The cousins are mostly broke (except for Matt) and need to sell the land and receive about a billion dollars. Matt's world is shaken when his wife goes into a coma after a boating accident. Matt gets his two daughters, Alexandra (Shailene Woodley) and Scottie (Amara Miller) together and then learns from Alexandra, that his wife was having an affair. Matt must balance the sale of the land with the impending doom of his wife while on a cross-Hawaiian trip to find the man who had the affair.
The whole film is extremely entertaining. There was never a moment when I was bored. The film is very mature and deals with a lot of tough subjects but still has a lot of light moments most of which come from Sid (Nick Krause), who is hilarious. I think that the setting also adds to the film immensely. The whole film is shot beautifully and has a general feeling of paradise but deals with these devastating and highly emotional issues. That is one more thing that made the film great for me.
It's hard to make a film that is both emotional and funny. My favorite example is Forrest Gump. This is not a film like Gump, but it balances the emotions of the sad and funny like that film. Clooney and Woodley give great performances and overall The Descendants is a great film.
