Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is the fourth installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean series. The series was supposed to end as a trilogy after 2007's At World's End, but Producer Jerry Bruckheimer brought it back for a fourth chapter. Johnny Depp is back as Jack Sparrow, Geoffrey Rush is back as Barbossa, and Kevin McNally is back as Gibbs. Those are the only actors and characters that returned from the previous films. Director Gore Verbinski also left and Rob Marshall steps in as director.
The film starts the Spanish finding the journal of Ponce De Leon, the man who discovered the Fountain of Youth. Then we shift to Jack, who is trying to break Gibbs out of prison. He does break him out but a group of English Soldiers catch him and take him to the King. Jack is in possession of a map to the Fountain of Youth. The King (Richard Griffiths) wants to find the fountain. Jack escapes the King's court. Then he is kidnapped by Angelica (Penelope Cruz), an old love. He is taken to Blackbeard's ship. Blackbeard (Ian McShane) is Angelica's father and also wants to find the fountain. Meanwhile, the King of England sends Barbossa to find the fountain. Barbossa is now a privateer in the King's army.
This installment is enjoyable, but not the best in the Pirates series. Characters like Pintel and Ragetti that I enjoyed from the first film are gone. Barbossa explains that they were killed in a raid by Blackbeard. I missed the old crew a lot. There is a new crew on Blackbeard's ship, but they are not very interesting.
Also, the sea battle that were a large part of the first three films are virtually gone. The film takes place on land mostly. There were a few opportunities for more action, but the film did not take them. Overall, a pretty bad Pirates movie.
THE FINAL GRADE: C-
